Pinterest Declutter
Free · No account · No upsell

Pinterest ads don't interrupt your feed. They are your feed.

That's why they work. A promoted pin looks exactly like the thing you came to Pinterest for, sitting in the same grid, cropped to the same shape. This is a free Chrome extension that deletes them, along with the "Shop similar" carousels and product upsells.

Your feed, with and without

What it does

One site. One job.

Promoted pins

Gone from your home feed, search results, and related pins. It catches them by the "Promoted" label Pinterest is legally required to show, so it keeps working when they reshuffle the code.

Shopping modules

"Shop similar," "Shop the look," product carousels, price tags on pins. The whole commerce layer, off by one toggle.

Leaves a mark

Instead of vanishing, a blocked pin leaves a small dashed stub. If it ever grabs something real, you click "Show anyway" and it comes straight back.

What it can't do

It only runs on Pinterest. It can't run anywhere else.

Chrome extensions ask for permission to read the sites you visit. Most ad blockers ask for all of them, because they have to. This one asks for Pinterest, so Chrome will not let it read your bank, your email, or any other tab. That limit is written into the manifest, not promised in a privacy policy.

It also makes no network calls. Nothing about you leaves your browser, because there is nowhere for it to go. The whole thing is 12 files and 15 KB, and you can read every line before you install it.

And it's free. Not free-for-now, not free-until-you-hit-a-limit. There's no account to make, no pro tier holding the good half back, and nothing to cancel later. I built it because the ads annoyed me.

Install

Not on the Chrome Store. That's on purpose.

Getting listed means a review queue and an update pipe that can quietly push new code to your browser later. Loading it yourself skips all of that. The tradeoff is five slightly awkward minutes, once.

  1. Download and unzip

You'll get a folder called pinterest-declutter. Put it somewhere you won't delete by accident, like Documents. Chrome loads it from that folder every time it starts.

  2. Open Chrome's extensions page

Paste chrome://extensions into the address bar. Chrome blocks links to this page, so it has to be pasted.

  3. Turn on Developer mode

Top right corner of that page. It's a toggle.

  4. Click "Load unpacked"

Top left, once Developer mode is on. Pick the folder you unzipped. Not the zip, the folder.

  5. Reload Pinterest

Any tab you already had open needs a refresh. New tabs work straight away.

Chrome will nag you. Every so often it shows a "disable developer mode extensions" prompt on startup. Dismiss it and carry on. That warning exists for extensions you didn't choose to install.

Worth knowing

Two things this doesn't pretend to do.

It hides ads, it doesn't block them. The pins are removed from view, not stopped from loading, so Pinterest may still count an impression. Blocking at the network layer would mean breaking the images you actually came for, since they share the same servers.

Pinterest changes its code, and this will eventually break. When it does, a promoted pin slips through. Every rule lives in one file called rules.js with a comment explaining what each one catches, so fixing it is a small edit rather than a rewrite.

Delete the ads. Keep the Pinterest.
